Prerequisites

There are no formal pre-requisites for attending this course. Many students attend without prior background in audiometry or health assessment. The course does, however, include a lot of material and some study is required in order to pass the written assessment.

Once registered, students will be asked to bring copies of the two key reference documents:

  • Australian Standard AS/NZS 1269 Part 4: Auditory Assessment (there is a cost to purchase this)
  • Managing Noise and Preventing Hearing Loss at Work Code of Practice, download from your state government workplace safety body (this is a free document)

Teaching Approach

We use a range of teaching methods to assist students to learn the key skills and knowledge, including:

  • Hands-on practice
  • Written exercises
  • Role plays
  • Industry anecdotes
  • Visual and auditory presentations
  • Quizzes
  • Demonstrations
  • "At-elbow" instruction and supervision

The course is taught to small-medium sized groups, allowing one-on-one, hands-on practical tuition and individually tailored skill development. Many graduates find the course surprisingly interesting (and even fun!) — our teachers are knowledgeable and enjoy what they do, which comes through in the teaching.

Assessment

To graduate from this course, students must demonstrate competence in the 16 training course elements described in AS/NZS 1269.4. Assessment of competence is via:

    1. Practical assessment. On the final day, practical skills are formally assessed using well-practiced templates and guides worked on during the course.
    1. Open-book written assessment. This includes a pre-course assignment, quizzes during the course, and a final take-home written assessment (due the following week).

The pass rate for this course on first attempt is high (over 90%), although supplementary assessments are offered when required.

Course graduates receive a Certificate of Competence from The Hearing Company, Australia’s leading occupational audiometry course provider. The Certificate describes competency in the key aspects of occupational audiometry as detailed in: AS/NZS 1269.4, Managing Noise & Preventing Hearing Loss at Work Code of Practice, and Work Health & Safety Regulations. The skills obtained from this course can be used in any occupational audiometry setting in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.

What Makes Us Different

Unlike shorter workshops or online courses that focus on theory, this 4-day course provides extensive supervised hands-on practice — every student performs multiple full hearing assessments on real subjects. Our presenters have over 30 years of clinical and teaching experience in occupational audiometry, supported by our fully trained Skills Coaches during the one-on-one practical sessions. Small class sizes (max 8) mean you won’t get lost in a crowd.

Industry Recognition

This course complies with Work Health and Safety regulation 58 (Audiometric testing) and meets the competency requirements described in Australian Standard AS/NZS 1269.4. Our Senior Presenter, Glenn Johnson, has presented at international conferences and is widely regarded as the go-to expert in occupational audiometry across Australia. The course is recognised by employers across the mining, construction, manufacturing, and healthcare sectors. It also satisfies the training requirements for NSW Coal Industry Order 45.

What our Students Say

Don’t just take our word for it — hear from the professionals who have completed our Occupational Audiometry Course and use their skills every day in workplaces across Australia.

  • The course was well paced, easy to understand and with the right amount of time to practice skills. The course was very well delivered and well supported by materials and exercises. I gained a much greater understanding about hearing and the effect of workplace noise. I also developed a new skill that I now feel confident about putting into practice.

  • Very informative, professional and enjoyable 4 days. The course was structured and taught in a way that was easy to understand. At the end, I felt far more confident in ear examinations and conducting hearing tests. Usually during courses, I fall asleep after lunch — not this one! I found the whole course was interesting ++.

FAQs

Have a question? Below we answer the most frequently asked questions, from transfers and cancellations to what to bring on day 1.

  • Are the skills and knowledge transferable throughout Australia?

Yes! All states/territories now follow the specifications of the Work Health and Safety Regulations (or similar), the Managing Noise and Preventing Hearing Loss at Work Code of Practice and Australian Standard AS/NZS1269.4. The Occupational Audiometry Course provides full compliance with these key documents.

  • Does the course provide compliance with Australian Standard AS/NZS1269.4?

Yes, the course materials and skill set are drawn directly from the detailed list of 16 competency requirements for audiometric testers described in Appendix D of AS/NZS 1269.4.

  • Why is the course conducted over 4 days?

In short, there is a lot of material to cover and skills to learn. Our focus is on ensuring students complete the course with confidence in their new skills and knowledge, and this takes time. We provide multiple one-on-one practice sessions, each building on the previous until students are capable of independently and accurately completing a full assessment. The Australian Standard is also a very detailed document, and we need time to teach the material and discuss how to integrate into the workplace. We acknowledge that people learn at different paces (some much faster than others) and in any group this is a challenge for the teachers. We’ve found that running the course over 4 days allows the majority of students to pass, without being too stressful for less confident learners.

  • What is the cancellation policy?

The following fees are payable should a participant withdraw from the course: Following registration: 10% of full course fee. Within 3 weeks of the starting date: 50% of full course fee. Within 1 week of the starting date: 100% of full course fee.

  • Can a registration be transferred to a colleague?

Yes, we accept transfers to another person but only within the same course. Deferring a registration to another course (different dates) is regarded as a cancellation.

  • Does everyone pass this course?

No, passing the course is not guaranteed although the pass rate is very high (over 90%). Students must pass written and practical assessments to obtain a Certificate of Competence. To pass the practical assessment students are required to demonstrate competence (as specified in AS/NZS1269.4) in the several key aspects. The written assessment includes a pre-course assignment, in-course quizzes and a take-home (open book) exam. Passing the course usually requires some effort and study. While not everyone is keen on assessments, we draw on over 30 years’ experience (and enthusiasm!) to design methods and materials to support the majority of students (so far, 2,000 and counting…) to learn what’s required over 4 days.

  • Do I have to bring an audiometer to the course?

No, this is not required, although students are welcome to bring equipment if they would like advice on how to use a particular audiometer. We supply all required practice equipment, including audiometers, otoscopes and consumables.

  • Can I claim Professional Development points for this course?

Yes, the Occupational Audiometry Course provides up to 28 hours of contact and tuition, which can be claimed towards CPD requirements.

  • Where are the courses conducted?

We conduct public courses several times a year in the location of most demand; usually Perth, Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide. We also regularly conduct customised, in-company courses for organisations with multiple employees to be trained. This can work out as a cost-effective and efficient way to upskill a team. Our equipment and teaching personnel are completely portable.

  • What other courses do you offer?

We offer a range of courses focused on conducting occupational audiometry. These include a half-day workshop on fitting insert earphones (for testing outside a booth) through to 1 and 2-day courses which teach basic or fundamental audiometry skills. See our range of courses.

  • Who can I contact for more information?

Please contact Libby McCarthy, Course Manager, with any questions or to discuss the suitability of this course for your requirements: 1300 118 222 or manager@hearingcompany.com.au.

  • What should I bring or prepare before attending?

Once registered, students will be asked to bring to the course copies of two key reference documents: (1) Australian Standard AS/NZS 1269 Part 4 Auditory assessment, and (2) Managing Noise and Preventing Hearing Loss at Work Code of Practice (free to download from your state government workplace safety body). Links to Australian state/territory health and safety regulatory bodies can be found on the Safe Work Australia website.
