Insert Earphones Workshop (half day)

A 4-hour session on safely and effectively fitting insert earphones and earmuffs.

The Insert Earphones Workshop provides hands-on training in the safe and effective fitting of insert earphones and earmuffs for occupational audiometry. Based on AS1269.4, this half-day program teaches testers how to achieve high levels of noise reduction, without a booth — making Standards-compliant testing possible in more locations, for less cost.

Prerequisites

The Insert Earphones Workshop is only available to graduates of a formal course in audiometry and otoscopy, such as the 4-day Occupational Audiometry Course or Intermediate Audiometry Workshop conducted by The Hearing Company. This ensures competence in Australian Standards audiometry and otoscopy techniques, allowing our teacher to focus on developing advanced skills during the workshop. There is no other pre-course preparation required.

Teaching Approach

We provide one-on-one supervised practice along with exercises, handouts and all practice equipment.

    The workshop content is developed from Australian Standard AS 1269.4 Auditory assessment, National Acoustic Laboratories (NAL) research, and audiologists with over 20 years of teaching and clinical practice.

    Students attending this workshop will receive a Certificate of Attendance from The Hearing Company, Australia’s leading occupational audiometry training provider.

      The workshop provides 4 hours of tuition, which can be claimed towards CPD requirements.

      Glenn draws on over 30 years experience as a clinician, educator and consultant. After a decade in clinical audiology practice Glenn’s interest evolved into understanding the effects of loud noise and other hazards on hearing, particularly in the occupational/industrial environment.

      He established The Hearing Company in 2006, presenting occasional courses in teaching hearing testing. Now, 20 years on, Glenn’s passion and knowledge in the area has flourished, as has the business.       • Does the course provide compliance with Australian Standard AS 1269.4?

        Yes. The insert earphones + earmuff combination appears in the 2014 (current) version of Australian Standard AS 1269.4. The Standard also describes the level of external noise that is acceptable when using this combination — much higher than other ear-level headphone equipment.

      • Do insert earphones meet Australian Standard AS 1269.4?

        Yes, they certainly do. The insert earphones + earmuff combination appears in the 2014 (current) version of the Australian Standard AS 1269.4. For reference, while insert earphones look “unconventional”, they have been in widespread use by audiologists (university-trained hearing specialists) around the world for decades.

      • Can anyone learn how to use insert earphones?

        Yes, we can train any tester, provided they have undertaken formal training in audiometry and otoscopy (ear inspection). The 4-day Occupational Audiometry Course or Intermediate Audiometry Workshop are suitable provide the appropriate level of prerequisite training.

      • What is the cancellation policy?

        The following fees are payable should a participant withdraw from the course: Following registration: 10% of full course fee. Within 3 weeks of the starting date: 50% of full course fee. Within 1 week of the starting date: 100% of full course fee.

      • Can a registration be transferred to a colleague?

        Yes, we accept transfers to another person but only within the same course. Deferring a registration to another course (different dates) is regarded as a cancellation.

      • Is there a course certificate?

        Yes, students will be issued with a Certificate of Attendance from The Hearing Company, Australia’s leading occupational audiometry trainers.

      • Do I have to bring an audiometer to the course?

        No, this is not required. We supply all required practice equipment including insert earphones, otoscopes and consumables.

      • Can I claim Professional Development points for this course?

        Yes, the Insert Earphones Workshop provides 4 hours of tuition, which can be claimed towards CPD requirements. Please check with your professional registration body for specific requirements.

      • Where are the courses conducted?

        We conduct public courses a couple of times a year in the location of most demand — usually Sydney, Brisbane, Perth or Adelaide. We often conduct the workshop immediately following our comprehensive 4-day Occupational Audiometry Course. We can also conduct in-company workshops for organisations with multiple employees to be trained. Our equipment and teachers are completely portable.
