Comprehensive training in the audiometry requirements of WA's new Work Health and Safety (WHS) legislation.

The Conversion to Occupational Audiometry workshop provides comprehensive "gap" training in the audiometry requirements of WHS regulation 58, now in law throughout WA. This 2-day program is designed to equip WorkCover WA Approved Audiometric Officers to achieve full compliance with the new law and best practice testing documents: Code of Practice Managing Noise and Preventing Hearing Loss at Work and AS 1269.4.

Duration

This 2-day program runs from 8:30am to 4:30pm. Students must attend all sessions on both days. Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea are provided.

Prerequisites

Participants wishing to achieve a Certificate of Competence in Occupational Audiometry must be current WorkCover WA Approved Audiometric Officers. A pre-course assignment is required before attending the workshop.

Teaching Approach

The workshop combines theory with hands-on practical exercises, including the essential skill of audiogram comparison. Students receive a course manual and workbook.

    The content is delivered by Glenn Johnson, an Occupational Audiologist with over 30 years’ experience, with plenty of question-and-answer and discussion sessions throughout.

    Assessment

    To achieve the Certificate of Competence in Occupational Audiometry, attendees must successfully complete:

    • A pre-course assignment and open book written assessment

    • Demonstrating competence in practical skills in line with best practice techniques, including audiometry, otoscopy, and audiogram description

    This achieves status as a WorkSafe WA “competent person”, eligible to conduct regulation 58 hearing tests.

    Glenn draws on over 30 years experience as a clinician, educator and consultant. After a decade in clinical audiology practice Glenn’s interest evolved into understanding the effects of loud noise and other hazards on hearing, particularly in the occupational/industrial environment.

    He established The Hearing Company in 2006, presenting occasional courses in teaching hearing testing. Now, 20 years on, Glenn’s passion and knowledge in the area has flourished, as has the business.     • Does the course provide compliance with Australian Standard AS 1269.4?

      Yes. The skills and knowledge obtained through this workshop will enable existing audiometric testers to achieve compliance with WHS regulation 58, the Code of Practice Managing Noise and Preventing Hearing Loss at Work, and Australian Standard AS 1269.4 Auditory assessment.

    • What is the cancellation policy?

      The following fees are payable should a participant withdraw from the course: following registration — 10% of full course fee; within 2 weeks of the starting date — 50% of full course fee; within 1 week of the starting date — 100% of full course fee.

    • Can a registration be transferred to a colleague?

      Yes, we accept transfers to another person but only within the same course. Deferring a registration to another course (different dates) is regarded as a cancellation.

    • Is there a course certificate?

      Yes. Students who successfully complete the pre-course assignment, open book written assessment, and demonstrate practical competence will be issued with a Certificate of Competence in Occupational Audiometry describing the skills mastered during the workshop.

    • Do you offer this course at a public venue?

      Yes. We conduct public courses in Perth. We can also conduct in-company courses for organisations with multiple employees to be trained. This can work out as a cost-effective and efficient way to upskill a team.

    • Where are the courses conducted?

      Public courses in Perth are usually conducted in Floreat. We also offer in-house courses, conducted at company premises. Our equipment and teaching personnel are completely portable.

    • Is this course approved for conducting NSW Coal Industry Order 45 assessments?

      No. This course is not approved by Coal Services for training nurses to conduct NSW Coal Industry Order 45 health surveillance audiometric tests. Coal Services has approved our comprehensive 4-day Occupational Audiometry Course and 2-day Intermediate Audiometry Workshop.

    • What other courses do you offer?

      We offer a range of courses focused on conducting occupational audiometry.
