20 years ago our Director, Glenn Johnson, hatched an idea for a start up: training people to do hearing tests on noise exposed workers. From this small side gig, working from a home office, we’ve evolved into a national business with customers across the country.

Today, The Hearing Company is Australia’s premier, full-service provider of audiometry services for testing and managing workers in high noise industries.

FAQs

  • Do companies have to conduct hearing tests?

    Yes, in high noise industries. Across Australia, companies are legally required to conduct hearing tests on noise-exposed workers.

    Work Health and Safety regulation 58 (now enacted in most states/territories), states that audiometric testing is mandatory for workers who are frequently required to wear hearing protectors to reduce their exposure to loud noise.

  • How often are hearing tests required?

    Within 3 months of commencing in a noisy role and then at least every 2 years.

    More frequent testing is recommended when workers are exposed to very high noise levels or if exposed to ototoxic substances (chemicals that could damage the ear).

  • How do I learn more about the testing requirements?

    There are two key guidance documents, which provide detailed descriptions of how to conduct audiometry on noise-exposed workers: (i) Code of Practice – Managing noise and preventing hearing loss at work and (ii) Australian Standard AS1269.4 Auditory assessment.

    These documents are heavy on detail, and a casual read through won’t prepare testers to properly understand how to conduct tests according to best practice. Our comprehensive Occupational Audiometry Course focuses on these documents and prepares students to become competent and confident audiometric testers.

  • Do hearing tests need to be conducted in an audiometric booth?

    Not necessarily. Australian Standard AS1269.4 specifies that testing needs to be conducted in a “quiet environment”. How quiet is quiet…? The maximum permissible decibel levels for a test environment are specified in the Australian Standard. Acoustic testing routinely shows that a regular consulting room is highly unlikely to be quiet enough.

    The two most effective ways of achieving quiet are by using an audiometric booth or using insert earphones and earmuff combination. For more information on insert earphones equipment and training visit the Insert Earphones Workshop page.

  • What are the costs for setting up to conduct legislation-compliant workplace hearing tests?

    This will vary depending on the type of equipment and the method for reducing background noise (a key element of a compliant testing practice).

    As an estimate, the price for an audiometric booth and audiometer (machine used to test hearing) ranges between $12-18,000.00 ex GST. The cost of insert earphones equipment ranges between $6-11,000.00 ex GST.

  • We currently conduct audiometry, but are we doing things “properly”, according to legislation and best practice?

    If you’re self-taught or someone at work showed you, then the answer is highly unlikely to be no! It turns out, there’s a lot more involved to conducting an accurate test than “pushing a few buttons”.
